Tyre chains?

Postby leoynage » Wed Dec 14, 2016 10:25 am

I need to go on a winter trip, and i may find my self in a situation that i may need some snow chains.
Winter tyres is a no go, as i live in the city and don't need them just for a once a year trip.
According to the manual.

Tyre chains are only permitted on the
front wheels.
246 Vehicle care
Always use fine mesh chains that add
no more than 10 mm to the tyre tread
and the inboard sides (including chain
lock).
9 Warning
Damage may lead to tyre blowout.
Tyre chains are permitted on tyres of
size 195/65 R15, 205/55 R16 and
215/55 R16.

I have 225/45/17 on my Astra K, so i suppose tyre chains is a no go, right?
So what are my options for snow roads?

After some own research i am looking towards this :
http://www.autosock.co.uk/autosock-for-cars/

Apparently they have good reviews and will not be a problem to fit to the astra i suppose.

Do they hold up good in terms of wear?
In the instructions it says you must be extra careful with them, slow acceleration, no hard braking, taking them of asap on tarmac etc..
I have read numerous reviews about these kind of snow shocks (not autosock though) being torn off after one use.

I bought some Autosocks a few years back for my old car, haven't had to use them yet; but as I understand, they are not a full replacement for snow chains as such, because they aren't as durable. I'd imagine they're pretty much for short-term use, driving slowly, just to help get you off the worst of the ice and snow.

I myself have Michelin CrossClimates on, which are summer tyres, but with m+s marking and 3 peak mountain snowflake certification. Basically, some all-season tyres (but Michelin doesn't call them that) biased towards summer/rain conditions. They seem pretty decent in tests on the snow, so I'd consider them useful for places that only have occasional snow, but I have yet to test them on snow yet.
